Little contact, no shared weight. No contact, shared space and connection. No physical contact, no connection? We’ll dance with questions around the level of contact and the fine-tuning of attention with our partner(s). What happens within me, within the duo or trio, and within the space itself when we’re not constantly in physical contact? What emerges, and what unfolds in the space in-between me and my partner(s)? At times, we may feel uneasy or even fearful of that space where physical contact fades, and we experience it as emptiness, silence, or a gap. Yet this space is anything but void; it is a rich space, full of potentials. Linda and Joaquín are eager to explore a new skill together: “creating distance” — “making space” To refresh and nourish the relationship, to invite dynamic shifts, to step beyond the gravitational pull of a symbiotic dance and into unknown of improvisation. The in-between, and all that arises within it, will be the focus of this CI intensive weekend. You might be wondering — how will we move through this CI workshop? Our approach gives equal importance to stretching the muscles and stretching the mind. In this shared teaching experience, our focus is space: how to create it, densify it, distribute it, and release the notion of space as something ‘empty’. We’ll share theoretical tools, technical experiments, duo and trio exercises, and moments of collective reflection. - Linda & Joaquín - We met in 2022, in the endless dances of the Contact Improvisation camp in Tuscany, Italy. From that point on, our connection grew, nourished not only by dancing but also through deep theoretical exchanges about our practice. Mutually inspired by each other's distinct ways of exploring contact, and by the larger landscape of CI, we now find ourselves in a continual state of discovery together. Joaquín feels like the one who "opens," while Linda "closes" — a dynamic tension that becomes a dance in itself. Linda Bufali (ITA) I met C.I. in 1998 during a physical theatre course. I was fascinated by it and began a long learning process that continues to this day. Since 2008 I have been teaching in many Italian communities and abroad (Spain, France, Austria, Gremany, Belgium, Ukraine, Greece, Israel, Japan). Teaching means to me feeding my own research and satisfying the need to contribute to and support that of others. I conceived and organised events with the desire to spread CI as much as possible (Italy Contact Camp and CicloNomade) because I believe it is an extraordinary, powerful and healthy Revolution that starts from us, from our bodies. Personally, I experience C.I. as the best way I have in this life to meet someone outside of social compromises, to meditate and keep the urge to move alive. Existing in the practices of dance and improvisation, experimental psychology, and philosophy, Joaquín has been obsessed in ‘ways of knowing’ and ‘gestures’ of research in dance improvisation and science. Challenging classical divergences between subject/object, in both his dancing explorations and academic work. Joaquín has grown thinking-in-movement in Bruxelles and the dance artists who have most nourished him with their material about improvisation and that he has studied with are D. Lepkoff, K.J. Holmes, J. Hamilton, L. Nelson, C. Morrisey, R. Chung, N. Little, S. Smith, M. Kivaldy and K. Nelson. Viewing dance and (contact) improvisation as multi-faceted, he is presently absorbed in the physical aspects of the study, but too theory, conversation, written and artistic creation. You're very welcome to stay overnight at the studio (Casa del Popolo) in Camogli on Saturday night, and if needed, on Sunday night as well. Just keep in mind that the space needs to be cleared by 10 am on Monday. This option is completely free of charge, with space for up to 15 people. The studio is a wonderfully quiet spot right in the heart of Camogli. The studio has bathrooms and tatamis but no showers or kitchen—though the sea (or the beach showers) make for great alternatives. There are also plenty of places just a minute away where you can grab something to eat. We’d recommend bringing your own inflatable camping mattress and sleeping bag for extra comfort. There may also be an option to arrange accommodation for €10 per night in some of the homes of dancers from the Genoa community, with food being self-managed. | PRACTICAL INFOS | The workshop will be held in English. If needed, there will be of course informal translation available in Italian - meaning, there won't be a hired translator, but we'll self-organize to facilitate translation and help among ourselves.
